Light Fields in the Alpine-Adriatic Region
Thomas Girbl paints with fire.
His series Burningpictures comprises image objects and light sculptures created through controlled burning on canvas and wood.
Following presentations in Milan and New York, selected Burning Light Objects are now on view in Arnoldstein—at the tri-border area of the Alpine-Adriatic region. The exhibition is complemented by new works created especially for this unique site.
The historic monastery site of Arnoldstein carries a rich and eventful history: founded in 1106 on the remains of a former castle, shaped by earthquakes, fires, plundering, and repeated destruction. Constantly transformed, yet never lost, the site itself stands as a testament to transformation. Within these walls, Girbl’s works unfold as quiet spaces of resonance. Fire appears not as an end, but as a creative force—revealing structures, transforming surfaces, and giving rise to light.
A poetic exploration of transformation, light, and stillness—set in a place whose history itself has been shaped by fire.
